Arsenal out of Champions League after extra-time defeat by Wolfsburg

Bremer's winner ends Gunners' hopes of reaching first final since 2007

Katie McCabe's first-half penalty had levelled the tie on aggregate but the visitors eventually prevailed

Arsenal's hopes of reaching the Women's Champions League final for the first time since 2007 were ended by a heartbreaking extra-time defeat to Wolfsburg at a sold-out Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had fought back from a 2-0 first-leg deficit to level the tie on aggregate through Katie McCabe's first-half penalty.

But Wolfsburg, who have won the competition twice, showed their class in extra-time as Jill Roord's superb cross was headed home by Lena Oberdorf in the 98th minute.

Arsenal pushed for an equaliser but it was Wolfsburg who struck again in the 119th minute, with Jill Roord slotting home to make it 3-1 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate.

It was a cruel blow for Arsenal, who had been the better side for much of the game.

Jonas Eidevall's side had created a number of good chances to take the lead in the first half, with Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead both going close.

But it was Wolfsburg who took the lead in the 18th minute when Ewa Pajor prodded home from close range after Arsenal had failed to clear a corner.

The Gunners responded well to going behind and equalised in the 34th minute when McCabe converted a penalty after Miedema had been brought down by Kathrin Hendrich.

Arsenal continued to press for a second goal but Wolfsburg held firm and the game went to extra-time.

The visitors took the lead in the 98th minute when Roord's cross was headed home by Oberdorf.
