Kanwar Yatra 2024: Devotees to Offer Holy Ganges Water to Lord Shiva
Origins and Route of the Pilgrimage
The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage undertaken by devotees of Lord Shiva, known as Kanwariyas. It originates from the historic Badrinath-Kedarnath route, but today, Kanwariyas primarily travel along the following path:
- Haridwar
- Saharanpur
- Shamli
- Meerut
- Ghaziabad
Purpose of the Yatra
During the Kanwar Yatra, Kanwariyas carry sacred water from the Ganges River to Shiva temples as an offering to Lord Shiva. The water is collected in earthen pots or "kawariyas," which are then carried on the devotees' shoulders or balanced on their heads.

The Kanwar Yatra 2024 will commence on July 22 and conclude on August 6. In preparation for the pilgrimage, the Uttar Pradesh Police have declared that the Delhi-Meerut Expressway will be closed during certain days to facilitate the movement of Kanwariyas.
